Who is Angela Macuga?
Angela Macuga is the third ex-wife of Arthur Blank, co-founder of The Home Depot and owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. She was born in 1968 in Brooks, a small town south of Atlanta in Fayette County, and graduated from the University of South Carolina-Sumter with a degree in sales and marketing.
Her early career was in branding. Her foundation biography lists two employers: Graphic Solutions Group, where she worked as a consultant, and Boundless Network, where she was a premium sales executive. She married Blank in June 2016, and the two announced their separation on January 1, 2019.
The loss that shaped her advocacy
Before any Falcons camera found her, Macuga had already lived through the event that would define her public work. Her first husband died from alcohol, leaving her to raise three children alone. Her father had also been an alcoholic.
She rarely spoke to the press, but she explained her motivation once, in a 2015 interview with Mothers Against Drunk Driving:
“I am the mother of teenage children who lost their father to alcohol, and the daughter of an alcoholic father. I wanted to educate my children about the dangers of underage drinking while they are still young.”
Her advocacy never read as a billionaire’s wife lending her name to a cause. The harm she worked against had already run through her own family.
Meeting Arthur Blank through youth soccer
They met through their children. In early 2012, Blank was a regular at games in his son Joshua’s youth soccer league, where two of Macuga’s children, Emily and Drew, also played. He later called her “the poster child of what it means to be a soccer mom, and I mean that in a great way.”
By then Blank had separated from his second wife, Stephanie, who filed for divorce in 2013. He and Macuga grew close as soccer parents, became engaged in February 2014, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the news a month later.
The sport stayed at the center of the relationship. When Blank announced the expansion club that became Atlanta United, he linked the decision to Macuga and her children. The Atlanta journalist Maria Saporta, who covered the announcement, wrote that his voice broke as he spoke. He called the team personal and close to his heart and thanked his children and his new family. His enthusiasm for soccer, which he traced to his kids and to Macuga, helped push him toward the franchise, a deal the league valued at a reported $70 million to $100 million.
A partner before she was a wife
The clearest sign of what Macuga meant to Blank came in a moment that had nothing to do with weddings.
In December 2015, Blank was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Falcons released his statement two months later, in February 2016, while he and Macuga were still engaged. He wrote that the two of them had spent weeks seeing specialists together:
“Over the last several weeks Angie and I have visited a number of expert doctors and hospitals across the country to identify the best treatment options for me. I have chosen an aggressive approach that will include surgery and the overall prognosis is good.”
In the statement, Blank referred to her only as Angie. They were not yet married, and her name was unfamiliar enough that local reporters added her surname in brackets so readers would know who she was. She was with him through the diagnosis and the surgery that followed, months ahead of the wedding. He came through it cancer-free.
Her work with the Blank Foundation and MADD
The marriage itself was nearly invisible. The couple wed in June 2016 in a private ceremony, with no location, guest list, or photographs released. Blank mentioned it offhand to a columnist a month earlier, saying only that he was getting married in June.
Her public work during those years left a far clearer record. While married, Angela Blank held three roles at once:
- Director of the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the South, which has awarded more than half a billion dollars in grants.
- Co-chair of the Walk Like MADD 5K since 2013, the group’s biggest annual fundraiser.
- Member of the University of Georgia Board of Visitors.
She also helped build a year-round partnership between MADD Georgia, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Blank Foundation, an effort her own foundation profile credits to her leadership. In September 2016, the first Atlanta Falcons Rise Up and Run 5K and Walk Like MADD took place at the Georgia Dome.
The most durable piece carries her name. In October 2017, the Blank Foundation gave the University of Georgia $500,000 to create the Angela and Arthur M. Blank Scholarship Fund, which supports students from Atlanta’s Westside neighborhoods.
What happened to Angela Macuga after the divorce
Her last confirmed public appearance was the Atlanta United victory parade in December 2018, after the club won the MLS Cup. Days before the divorce was announced, she was not at the Falcons’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
On January 1, 2019, a representative for the Arthur M. Blank Foundation released a brief statement:
“Arthur and Angie Blank have agreed to amicably part ways. With respect and concern for each other and their families, no further public comment will be made regarding this private family matter.”
What followed was silence. The board seat, the MADD chairmanship, and the University of Georgia role all ended with the marriage, and she has not surfaced at a documented public event since.
That clean break set her apart from Blank’s earlier wives. His first wife, Diana, used her settlement to build the Kendeda Fund, now a major funder of environmental and social-equity work across the South. His second wife, Stephanie, stayed active in Atlanta philanthropy for years and chaired the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation. Both kept a public life after Blank. Macuga did not.
Seven years on, the scholarship still carries her name and the MADD partnership she helped build still runs. Both have outlasted her time in the public eye, and she has not appeared in public since the divorce.
